Early Bird Catches The Worm.

"The Early Bird Catches the Worm. The proverb literally means that when there are many birds vying with each other to catch a single worm, the bird that arrives early hasthe best chance of catching the worm. Similarly in life a person must be well ahead of others in terms of efforts or preparation."

Has your mom and dad ever said this to you? What about your teacher? Or even worse- your boss? Whether you like it or not, it is a very powerful proverb. It can be interpreted in many different ways. I always read it as I had to get my day started super early and before anyone else to actually be productive. I developed great habits starting at a young age. My parents would encourage me to hit our home gym before school to wake up my brain and get my creative juices flowing. They made me eat breakfast- even when I refused in Junior High because "I was fat." They grounded me when I was not doing my best in class (anything below an A). They limited the time I was around bad influences but let me have just a small taste of what it could be like without great parents. They encouraged me to get involved in church and grow my relationship with Christ on a daily basis.

I could go on and on and on how my parents influenced me as a child that has made me the person I am today. You never acknowledge at the right time how great your parents are until they are no longer right there in your face to make you be the best you can be. Now, they will celebrate my wins. But, do I dare tell them my losses? Heck no! Who wants people to know your failures?! Not me.

I am the perfect Shelby. I am the one who has my life together. I am the one that is up before every other bird. I am the one holding the worm.

But, there is one problem. That worm that was in my mouth was now being dangled in front of all of my followers on social media. Every chance that I had to post about "staying up late" or "putting in those hours" or "I sure love my clients more at Midnight" usually paired with a selfie of me in my glasses because somehow that makes me look like I am working harder, right? NO.

I call this my WAKE UP moment. It happened a few weeks ago while I was in my morning prayer time in my car. God literally said (because let's be real....He talks to us like we do everyone else LOL) "Shelby, get over yourself. No one cares how hard you work. No one cares how many awards you get. No one cares how much business you turned this week. You are here to uplift others and encourage them to work fearlessly towards their goals. Trying to be intimidating will not do that." I was like WOAH- hello slap in the face. What the heck have I been doing?! I am almost 25 years old. I sponsor 25 teens that do not care to see my selfie on Instagram. I am in leadership in many civic groups that certainly do not want to see that I put myself and company over the missions of their groups. Let's just say it was the best morning of my life.

So to say the least- I am absolutely not perfect. My highlights on Facebook make it look like I have it all together. I struggle just like every other business person. I make mistakes, I lose clients, I say the wrong words--it happens. But I learn from those moments. I have come to terms that I am not perfect. With an OCD mind and high level goals, I tend to get really hard on myself about not being "perfect." I am the worst at beating myself up and not listening to my circle around me- or not listening to the truth that God has to say about me.

If you struggle with this, I highly recommend looking from the outside in. Even get a different person's perspective. It will help you grow so much personally. There is one thing though, you cannot get offended. You have to be willing to take constructive criticism with an adult mindset and learn from it. Especially if you are a Christian and God beams down with His knowledge.

I hope this helps someone today. It was on my heart while I was laying in bed wide awake this morning. This was meant to reach somebody.

Make today amazing, friends.
